Timmy Rickard Presents Dirty Drum Breaks Vol 1 is full of some of the best recorded new breaks I’ve heard. According to MPC-Samples.com these breaks are “a collection of 163 original live drum breaks performed and produced by UK drummer Timmy Rickard, who is well known for his strong 60s/70s downbeat funk influence and his authentic vintage recording techniques.”

I’d certainly say that Timmy Rickard has a real knack for ‘authentic vintage recording techniques.” While some of these drums are vaguely familiar, these breaks are all new and all of them are warm and thick but crisp and clear. Quite honestly, describing these drums doesn’t do them justice. You have to hear them on a good pair of speakers, monitors or headphones to truly get the sense of what I attempting to illustrate here.

I absolutely enjoyed chopping these breaks on my MPC. It’s like chopping perfectly looped vinyl with all the punch and grit but none of the vinyl pops, hiss and crud. It was a pleasant surprise to have all the elements of a damn good vinyl break dig with none of the hassle of cleaning the sample without removing the magic. My monitors filled with big dense thump, crispy snappy snares and hats without the high frequency irritants of cheaper recordings. These drums are warm and smooth but snappy and bangin’.

One of the things that my inner organization freak really liked about these drums is the way they are organized. There are 10 folders with all different breaks in each folder. The folders are labeled by tempo. So, the 85bpm folder has all perfectly looped 85bpm breaks, the 90bpm folder has all perfectly looped 90bpm breaks… so forth and so on. Great!

Trust me on this one, your sample library will be better for having these fresh new toasty vintage breaks living amongst the classics.
